Pillgwenlly byelection on Newport Council Labour hold

The result of the of the Pillgwenlly byelection on Newport (Lab Defence) was

Omar Ali (Lab) 500
Paul Haliday (Lib Dem),233
Khalilur Rahman
(Plaid)167
Tony Ismail (Con), 155

This result actually saw some recovery for the Liberal Democrats after the 2012 election

Result of ward at last election (2012): Emboldened denotes elected
Labour 756, 703 (64%)
Conservative 306 (14%)
Plaid Cymru 277 (12%)
Liberal Democrats 150, 71 (10%)

The 2008 result at the height of the Labour Government unpopularity saw a close contest for all Parties.

Emboldened denotes elected
Labour 466, 464
Conservatives 377, 327
Liberal  Democrats  331,278
Plaid Cymru  375, 346

So it looks like a god night for Labour and some smiles for the Liberal Democrats

But Labour are not it appears losing they grip on local government in wales . Tough the forthcoming Riverside and Splot byelections on Cardiff council may give us a different result.
