Plaid's Liz Savile Roberts speaks as Gaeilge in commons.

It may come as a bit of  a surprise that The Irish language was spoken in the House of Commons by a Welsh MP for the first time in over 100 years y on Wednesday even more so that it was by s spoken by Welsh MP Liz Saville-Roberts during a debate on the introduction as Liz Saville-Roberts, who is a graduate of Celtic studies, called on the British government to introduce legislation to protect the rights of Irish speakers.

"Is cearta daonna iad cearta teanga agus tá cothrom na féinne tuilte ag lucht labhartha na Gaeilge," she said - which translates to:
"Language rights are human rights and the Irish speaking community are entitled to equality."

She added;

 "The British government pledged to introduce an Irish language act based on the experiences of Wales and the Republic of Ireland.""Will the minister uphold this commitment by introducing an Irish Language Act if power-sharing institutions are not restored within six months?"
 "Go raibh maith agat".

Unfortunately I have ben unable to copy the video of this but you may se it here.

It is understood that this is the first time Irish has been spoken by a sitting MP in the House of Commons since 1901.

An Irish language Act is the main obstacle preventing the Northern Ireland Assembly meting Unionist being presumably , that it would lead to a growth in people learning the language and developing greater "Nationalist" sentiments"

It is understood that this is the first time Irish has been spoken by a sitting MP in the House of Commons since 1901.

Irish Parliamentary Party MP for West Kerry Thomas O’Donnell spoke in Irish in 1901, delivering a "maiden speech", the Pall Mall Gazette reported at the time.
"Mr Thomas O’Donnell rose in the House last night to make his maiden speech, and addressed the Speaker in the Erse language.
"As a joke it was the feeblest performance that even Mr O’Donnell can have perpetrated, and by this time he ought to be consumed by his own blushes," the paper said.

Since the even after the formation of the Irish Free State there have bee numerous "Irish Nationalists"  elected to the House of Commons from Northern Ireland (despite Unionist gerrymandering ) and Liverpool Scotland was characterized by having two MPs of exceptionally long service. T.P. O'Connor served in the constituency for 44 years until his death in 1929, becoming Father of the House in 1918. It was the only constituency outside the island of Ireland ever to return an Irish Nationalist Party MP, and O'Connor continued to be re-elected in Liverpool under this label unopposed, despite the Irish Free State achieving Dominion status in 1922.

It is strange therefore that none of these  "Irish Nationalists" MP have tried to use  Gaeilge, in HOC procedures including SDLP members.

There are no SDLP  MPs at the moment as the party has been eclipsed by  Sinn Féin , who do not take their 7 seats.

So the only voices on what after Brexit and the question of the British Boarder In Ireland is a major contentious issue , that we here in the commons come from Unionist MPs.

Liz Saville Roberts deserves huge praise , for her use of Gaeilge, in the UK parliament, showing what an exceptional politician she is . We in Wales are proud of her and she has probably one many more admirers on the other side of the Irish sea.
