Political parties like no more than a defection to them on the eve of their party conference so the news that the Green Party's leader in Wales has announced that he has defected to Plaid Cymru may be a small coup bit an important one even so
Grenville Ham said a vote by Green Party members in Wales over the summer against splitting from the English Green Party had made it "untenable" for him to remain a member.
He had wanted an independent Welsh Green Party, but this was rejected by nearly 65% of members who voted.
Mr Ham called Plaid Cymru the "only party focused on the future of Wales".
Making the announcement, on the eve of Plaid Cymru's annual conference, he said:
"During my time as leader of the Greens in Wales I was unashamed to admit that I wanted the sole focus to be on Wales.
"However, after the membership decided that they wanted to remain a party of two countries, I felt my membership was untenable and I resigned my leadership."
Mr Ham said he had been brought up believing Plaid Cymru was a party for Welsh speakers but
"my experiences over the years have shown me that this simply isn't the case".
Oddly Mr Ham's case was made by the response of his former party
- So you’re Welsh, a Green Party member of the House of Lords, but didn’t know who your Welsh leader was? Probably says more about you than @GrenvilleHam to be honest... #ForWalesSeeEngland
- Part of me is disappointed with Mr Ham's defection I would have liked to see a Welsh Green Party on the lines of those in Scotland ,who have had moderate success but is an option for Independistas may feel that they don't support SNP policies but back Independence.
- Alas in Wales they have never established themselves and for either financial reasons or possibly sadly feel that they regard England and Wales to be political entity.
- Hopefully MrHam will not be lost within Plaid and hopefully help build a a strong
- Prehaps Plaid should emulate Québec solidaire who includes a number of collectives, made up of members in good standing who may, in compliance with requirements, promote their respective political views within Québec solidaire. Current collectives include:
- Alternative socialiste, the Quebec section of the Committee for a Workers' International
- Décroissance conviviale, a collective which promotes degrowth.
- Gauche Socialiste, the Quebec section of the reunified Fourth International.[
- Laïcité, a collective which promotes the separation of church and state.
- Mass critique, an anti-capitalist collective.
- Socialisme Internationale, the Quebec membership of the International Socialists.
- Tendance Marxiste Internationale, the Quebec section of the International Marxist Tendency]
- Option nationale, formerly active as a separate electoral party from 2011 to 2017.
The Parti Communiste du Québec – Parti Communiste du Canada (PCQ-PCC), left QS following its merger with Option nationale in 2017.]- Arguably the former Option nationale to merge , wa spart of the reason Quebec solidaire gained 7 seats among them Sol Zanetti the former leader of Option National and Catherine Dorion who was one of Option National most prominent candidates
- Will we see Grenville Ham gain a n assembly seat possibly on the regional list ,
- it would be most welcome, especially as it would seriously piss Jac o' the North off.
