SHOULD WE CREATE AN OFFICIAL FONT GYMRAEG?

Tory Cardiff councillor and prospective  assembly candidate (Cardiff North ) and former Big Brother contestant  Joel Williams caused a bit of a stir on twitter  with this.

Bilingual road signs are important in Wales BUT there should be something to distinguish Welsh from English- such as italic, colour or font. It can be so dangerous having to distinguish the texts of road signs here in Wales. 🚧🚦🚙

    1. New conversation

However I think that the main objection to Joel Williams  is the ridiculous an unsubstantiated that it can be so dangerous having to distinguish the texts of road signs here in Wales.

I myself asked a similar question back in  2015 on a much wider scale

SHOULD WE CREATE AN OFFICIAL FONT GYMRAEG?It is noticeable that when supermarkets do condensed to have Bilingual signs in Wales . The Welsh Language is often portrayed in a smaller and less distinct Font.Which has led me to ask the question should we have a distinct Font Gymraeg .I'm not suggesting we adopt the Gaelic Font used in Ireland. But it is distinct

In Scotland they don't use the Font but Gaelic is distinct when its used Gaelic-English signposts in ScotlandBut here in Wales Gymraeg is not only below the English but no effort is made  to make it distinct

So should we copy Ireland and have a clear and different Official Font for Gymraeg all Bilingual signs in Wales.I can see an argument that it could be sen as making the Welsh Language exotic rather than a living Language. But it might well be better than the system now where Gymraeg is given second billing.. Maybe the next Assembly committee responsible for Culture (is there one) should consider it.Maybe someone has even done so and there are examples of a Font Gymraeg.?Maybe even sponsor a Competition for an Official Gymraeg Font to be use on all new signs as and on existing signs as they ' are replaced.
It might even make it easier for the Odious Toby Young to get around Wales.

I don't think I should withdraw the question , just because some bloody Tory links the argument to a ridiculous claim over Road Safety.

For a Tory to ask a question about changing Road Signs considering he would probably object to the cost.

I doubt  the suggestion i made  that a program based on replacing signs over a period as they are renewed would work and he would be complaining that motorists would be confused by different signs in a stretch of road.

I wonder what the feeling over the  Gaelic font , does it enhance  or diminish the status of Irish ?

As i said i asked the question and I am not sure what MY answer is, I don't regret asking it.

Unlike Joel Williams who maybe does.

Another Investiture would be a case of insulting colonialism .

Fifty years ago a friend and I stood in Pontypridd, he carrying a Ddraig Goch and myself a placard  with the words "Charlie Winsor" shall not pass on it.

I think that today there would be more of us if the investiture was to take place and William becomes the Pretender to the 2Prince of ales" title.

It is encouraging to note

Welsh  First Minister Mark Drakeford has said. It would not be sensible to replicate the investiture 50 years on,
According to the BBC
Mr Drakeford said he was a republican at the time of the event and has not changed his mind since.
Monday is the 50th anniversary of Prince Charles' investiture at Caernarfon Castle.
Mr Drakeford said he imagined those who may be organising a future investiture "will be thinking about how you would organise things in contemporary Wales".
He made the comments as Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall began their week-long 15th summer tour of Wales.
When Prince Charles becomes king, the Duke of Cambridge will be in line to be the next Prince of Wales.
A poll carried out for BBC Wales earlier this year suggested that, if an investiture was to be held, 41% would like one similar to that Prince Charles held in 1969.

Another 20% said they would like an investiture to be held, but different to 1969, while 30% would like to see no investiture held at all.
Speaking at his monthly press conference, Mr Drakeford said: "I do remember the day. I'm an old fashioned republican myself and was at the age of 14.
"I haven't changed my mind personally in that way since."
He acknowledged it was a "huge celebration" for most people in 1969, but said "times have moved on".
"I don't think replicating ways in which things were done over 50 years or more ago is a sensible way to think about how you do things in the future," he said.
It wasn't for him to have a hand in that, he told journalists.
"But I imagine those who will be thinking about it, will be thinking about how you would organise things in contemporary Wales, rather than thinking you should go back to a model that's 50 years old as something you'd just want to pick up and replicate."
Sir Nicholas Soames, a lifelong friend of the prince who was a guest at the investiture, said he thought it could be held again.
"It's like saying 'Will the coronation happen again?' - well of course it will," the Conservative MP said.
"It may not be quite the same service. There won't be so many troops on parade... but I would be very surprised if it doesn't take place."

But it's not the same as  a coronation, the investiture of the Prince of Wales is the ceremony marking formal acknowledgement of a newly-created Prince of Wales. During the investiture ceremony, the prince is presented and invested with the insignia of his rank and dignity, similar to a coronation. An investiture is purely ceremonial, as the title is created via letters patent.

Investitures fell into abeyance and the revival of investing the Prince of Wales in 1911 was largely due to David Lloyd George's instigation. A similar ceremony was also held in 1969 for Queen Elizabeth II's son and heir, Prince Charles revived by the odious George Thomas.

It was purely political move as Plaid Cymru were on a wave and indeed threatened Labour's heartlands.

Plaid made a great error in not directly opposing the Investiture and I wonder if this would be repeated.

But one thing is clear 50 years ago the opposition to the Investiture  received very little publicity and with the Social Media we have today we can at least communicate with one another to ensure our voices are heard.

William Windsor will likely be over 40 when he becomes Pretender to the title and I wonder if he would really want to go through it .

But what he wants his irrelevant. Let's get of our knees and oppose this another

Your Empire has gone Boris and soon your Union will follow it.

I  don't share the view of most Independistas  and Nationalists  that   Boris Johnson yesterday made an  "extraordinary faux pas when he said the UK already had an England-only parliament – and it was Westminster".

It seems to me that Johnson knew exactly what he was saying and that like David Cameron  announcement of English Votes for English Laws (EVEL) straight after the defeat of the Scottish Independence  and it is intended in his views to "Put the Nats in their place."

The National reports that

"He made the slip at a Tory leadership hustings in Carlisle where he was asked if there was a case for devolution in England.
“I’m not convinced there is a case for an England-only parliament,” he said. “We have an England-only parliament. It’s in Westminster. It’s been there for a long time. I’m not disposed to create another parliament.
Johnson also said he would use some of the £5 million Westminster spends every year on advertising to put “a Union flag” on any money spent in Scotland. He said it was “ridiculous” that the devolved government was “claiming the credit” for “what was really a scheme or investment from the UK”.
“Let’s flag it up properly,” he said. “Let’s put a Union flag on this stuff and not let it be claimed by the Scot Nats.”
I doubt any 2 Scot Nats claim the Butchers apron .
He added that he would also look at creating a “unit for the Union” in
No 10 and would be announcing something today to “enhance and support the Union”.
In other words a specific UK  government   propagandaagency
Asked what he would do if he became prime minister and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wanted permission for another referendum, he said the 2014 vote had been a “once in a generation” event and he could see “no reason at all in going over that again”.
He went on to say that Sturgeon would be “bonkers” and “deranged” if an independent Scotland resulted in a hard border with England.
“I think if Nicola Sturgeon – and I want to be polite here but deranged springs to mind – were to impose a hard border on people coming from the rest of the UK to Scotland or goods and services coming from the rest of the UK to Scotland it would be absurd,” said Johnson.
“But of course we will not be doing any such thing. We will impose no borders ourselves nor do I think for a second that anything like that will happen.
This is the same arrogance as the Irish Boarder question  in which the UK England , would stil consider an Independent Scotland as still part of the Empire in the same way as they don't seem to have accepted that Ireland is their equal when it comes to diplomacy.
“One of the advantages of Brexit– and I don’t think people fully understand this – is that far from threatening the Union Brexit, if it is done right and sensibly, is going to cement and intensify our great Union, the awesome foursome of our country.”
Johnson said the SNP would “not have much of a song to sing” once the UK came out of the EU.
He claimed the SNP wanted to join the Euro and submit Scotland to the “entire panoply” of EU rules.
He said the “kicker” was their “brilliant” plan to “hand back control of Scotland’s fisheries to Brussels” just when the UK had “recovered control of its fisheries” and just when Scotland was on the verge of having “the power and incredible potential to develop the industry”
.
The myth that the EU  is responsible for the decline if the Scottish Industry   is a powerful  one in Scotland , but how long will it be that a UK outside the EU realises that that leaving is going to somehow replenish fish stocks overnight.
He said the SNP had no chance of getting elected if they put that in their manifesto.
“Brexit done sensibly and properly holds out a fantastic prospect of unifying our country in all sorts of ways and cementing the Union,” he said.
He said that independence for Scotland had been “honestly and expertly discussed” in the run-up to the 2014 vote just as the issues had been debated before the Brexit vote and in both cases the voters had come to the “right” conclusion.
“In the case of the Scottish referendum it was made absolutely clear at that time that it was a once in a generation event and I see no reason at all in going over that again,” he said.
Whatever you may say about referendums they do divide people one from another, they do divide families, they do divide societies and I think what people all want now is for people to come together and unite.”
Nothing has divided people as Brexit has , and Johnson carries the can  for the lies that led to a leave vote and those like myself , who initially accepted  the result now know we were conned and want second EU referendum not influenced by illegal donations  outside interests.
Johnson went on to pay tribute to Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson for the “extraordinary” rebirth of the Conservative Party in Scotland at the last election.
“It showed to me the strength of Unionism north of the Border and that people are voting now for the sensible Unionist party which is the Conservatives,” he said.
Returning to his theme that Brexit would strengthen the Union, he added: “Being Foreign Secretary as I was, you really understand quite how valued this country is around the world and it is not valued as England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales. It is valued as the UK – our military forces, our diplomats, our reputation for science or tackling climate change – it is the UK that is loved and admired around the world and to damage that is crazy.”

This is the deranged Empire Mark 2, that is in the head of English Nationalist which   once commanded that

When any of His Majesty's Ships shall meet with any Ship or Ships belonging to any Foreign Prince or State, within His Majesty's Seas, (which extend to Cape Finisterre) it is expected that the said Foreign Ships do strike their Topsail, and take in their Flag, in Acknowledgement of His Majesty's Sovereignty in those Seas; and if any shall refuse or offer to resist, it is enjoined to all Flag Officers and Commanders to use their utmost Endeavours to compel them thereto, and not suffer any Dishonour to be done to His Majesty.  time strike her Flag or Top-sail to His Majesty's Ship.
Your Empire is gone Mr Johnson and in a few years  so will your Union.
