The Elections in England once again proved that we need to consider proportional representation
Take Barking and Dagenham where Labour won every seat and whilst we may be glad that the BNP no longer have a presences it can't be good if there is no opposition,

Conservative Party | 0 | 22.34% |
British National Party | 0 | < 1% |
Independent | 0 | < 1% |
Green Party | 0 | < 1% |
Turnout: | 29.54% |
Not all councils provide such a breakdown but can we really assume that Labour deserve to hold 94 of 96 seats (there are two Lib Dems) on Manchester or 47 of 48 (one Green on Islington)? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Even the Lib Dems benefit from this where although they did take more than half the votes on Kingston received far more seats than they deserve,

It is true also of the Tories in their strongholds and that's the point these may be areas where a party is eminent but they are not fiefdoms we need vigorous opposition in councils and the current system which sees one party holding all the seats or where there is only a handful of opposition is not good. In Wales we now have the power to replace First Part the Post in local government and introduce proportional representation it is in the interest of democracy that we do so, |
