The
news that a Welsh MP has been interviewed by police over allegations of
a fraudulent expenses claim raises the real possibility of a
byelection,
Chris
Davies, Conservative MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, was referred to
police by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA). It is alleged he made a false expense claim for pictures used in his constituency office in 2016.
He has previously said he made an "honest mistake" and voluntarily spoke to the Metropolitan Police.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said inquiries were continuing.
"A 50-year-old man was voluntarily interviewed under caution on Tuesday, 17 July 2018," he added.
It is understood Mr Davies is accused of manually creating two invoices for £450 and £250 rather than submitting the full £700 claim for the pictures by computer.
He has previously said that he repaid the £450 sum, which was charged to a start-up fund for new MPs to set up offices.
Mr Davies was referred to IPSA in April 2018 and compliance officer Andy McDonald passed on the claim to the Metropolitan Police.
So if if he was to resign then it could lead to a very interesting by-election
Powys County which Brecon and Radnorshire, voted Leave 53.3% Remain 46.7% in the Euro elections and it would be interesting to see a contest in which the Liberal Democrats would be the main challengers.
At the last election Chris Davis took nearly all the previous Ukip votes to increase his majority

The real interest is whether the LIb Dems would risk playing their only queen
Kirsty Williams the current AM the only Liberal Democrat in Cardiff Bay is currently in charge of Education in the (not a coalition) Labour government.
At the last Assembly elections she increased her majority against the trend.

But she has shown interest in fighting the Parliamentary seat .
If she stood she would be favourite to win .
Would the Lib Dems however risk fighting their only Assembly seat on the same day.
If they were to lose both then it could be the end of the Liberal Democrats in Wales, with no Parliamentary or Assembly seats,
But if they won both then they could claim their long awaited revival may well be on the cards. But as I said only if they play their Queen,

The electorate are known to hate unnecessary elections and they would no doubt punish a Liberal Assembly candidate.
Not sure if that's borne with evidence
Assuming she could pull it off and get elected to the HoC she would be one of 13 Liberal MPs. The Liberals are currrently having great difficulty being heard because they are so few in number. They rarely have time in the Commons chamber to speak, rarely make contributions to current affairs programmes to put a Liberal perspective and are basically invisible. Against that here in Wales she runs one of the biggest government departments. If she were to go I think the only other Liberal in power in Wales is the cabinet member for finance in Pembrokeshire and now that the Tories and ousted Independent group look as thought they are on the same wavelength and have taken the chairs of two scrutiny committees recently his job does not look too secure.
